Is This Hyundai Genesis Coupe Wielding a Twin-Turbo V6?

The Hyundai Genesis has proven to be a hit for the Korean automaker. So much so, in fact, that Hyundai is even going to spin off the Genesis luxury sedan into its own brand. The big followup question then becomes, “what does the future hold for the Genesis Coupe?”
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe was never simply a two-door version of the refined four door. It is a model unto itself, and thus such a spinoff would allow the Coupe to grow in its own unique way. And according to Korean Car Blog, by way of Slash Gear, a potential future model has been spotted.

It may look like the current Genesis Coupe, but word is that this is a test mule for an upcoming model featuring serious power. The windshield on this car has the label “test car- 3.3T 8AT AWD.” For those keeping track, that’s a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 sending power through an eight-speed automatic to all-wheel drive. That’s a mighty fine combination of components.

The current Genesis Coupe lineup features a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 making 348 horsepower. Rumor has it this new turbocharged engine would make upwards of 480 horsepower–well above the 420-hp mark of the 5.0-liter V8 found in the Genesis sedan. Despite this rumor, Hyundai’s American CEO has stated the new Genesis Coupe will have the power of the current V8, but weigh much less.
That certainly indicates a forced-induction V6, but as for that horsepower figure? Let’s hope he’s being coy, and that we get an all-powerful turbo V6, likely under the N-Performance nameplate. We’ll know when the Genesis Coupe bows, destined for the 2017 or 2018 model year.
